What are the Aims of Counselling?

In my previous post about counselling we spoke about what is counselling and it’s aspect but let’s now talk about the aims that your counsellor might incorporate within your sessions.

- Insight: Learning about the origins and development of emotional difficulties.

- Connecting with others: Being able to better develop and maintain significant and satisfying relationships with other individuals (e.g., family, friends or within a work environment).

- Self-awareness: Developing the ability to become self-aware of emotions that might have previously been denied or misunderstood. Understanding how other individuals might perceive sense of self.

- Self- acceptance: Developing a more positive attitude towards oneself, evident from acknowledging particular ideas that might have been open to self-criticism and rejection.

- Problem-solving: Helping you to become equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to solve problems alone.

- Psychological education: Assisting you in learning ideas and techniques with which allows you to understand and control certain behaviour.

- Empowerment: Working on certain skills and knowledge which would allow you to take control over your life.

- Acquisition of social skills: Developing and mastering social and interpersonal skills (e.g. eye-contact, assertiveness, speaking around public).

I highly recommend engaging in counselling as it can provide you with valuable insights into your world.
